Onion growers from Castilla la Mancha have received good news that will become true during these final months of 2018. Spanish onion prices are expected to rise above their European competition.
Onion: A good harvest this season
According to the latest data, the harvest of onions in the crops of Castilla La Mancha is around 754,000 tonnes, surpassing last year’s figures and those of the rest Spanish regions this 2018. Rainfall in spring and autumn delayed the harvest, although the mild summer temperatures helped the onion to develop correctly and prevented the appearance of certain pests. All these weather conditions have resulted in a high quality onion of good calibre, which is favouring sales, especially in Europe where the main producing countries have fallen.
What has happened to onion in Europe?
In Europe there is a shortage of onions during these last months of the year, especially medium size onions, as in producing countries such as the United Kingdom, Holland and Germany production has fallen by 30%, 50% and 35% respectively. These falls are mainly due to adverse weather conditions which have affected the plantations leaving the product unusable or much smaller than it should be.
Consequences on the market
The lower production of onion in European producing countries and the excellent harvest in Spain favour producers in our country who see the product begin to rise. The countries we have mentioned will have to import to cover their needs, although consumers will also find smaller onions in supermarkets. Everything seems to indicate that the 2018/2019 season could be very interesting and beneficial for Spanish onion producers.
